Self-care is a big part of looking after your mental health and can also support recovery and treatment if you’re living with a mental illness. It means taking time to do things that help you live well and support both your physical and mental health. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), even small daily acts of self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and boost your energy.
NIMH Self-Care Tips You Can Try:
• Get regular exercise: Just 30 minutes of walking every day can lift your mood. Splitting up shorter walks works, too!
• Eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated: A balanced diet and plenty of water help your energy and focus. Be mindful of how caffeine and alcohol affect your mood.
• Make sleep a priority: Try to stick with a consistent sleep schedule and reduce screen time before bed to improve rest.
• Do relaxing activities: Explore wellness programs or apps that include meditation, breathing exercises, or muscle relaxation. Make time for low-stress hobbies, music, reading, or time in nature.
• Set goals and priorities: Decide what needs to get done now and what can wait. Practice saying “no” when you feel overwhelmed, and appreciate what you accomplish each day.
• Practice gratitude: Daily remind yourself of specific things you are thankful for by writing them down or replaying them in your mind.
• Focus on positivity: Pay attention to negative or unhelpful thoughts and challenge them.
• Stay connected: Reach out to friends, family or trusted adults who can offer emotional support and practical help when you need it.
Self-care looks different for everyone, and NIMH notes that finding what works best for you may require some trial and error. Check out the North Shore Mental Health Group Resource Guide for mental health providers and support within the community.
