Wilderness First Aid Training in Grand Marais, May 12 & 13

Cook County Higher Education (CCHE) and AVH Globall LLC will offer a Wilderness First Aid Course on May 12 & 13 at CCHE, 300 West 3rd Street, Grand Marais.

The course is for outdoor enthusiasts participating in overnight or short-term wilderness adventures. Students will learn to recognize medical emergencies, develop essential life-saving skills, and gain hands-on experience with patient assessment and basic field care for common wilderness injuries. Certifications earned during this course are Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Adult CPR with AED (Automated External Defibrillator), and EpiPen auto-injector use for Anaphylaxis. These certifications are valid for three years.

Alice Henshaw of AVH Global, a technical training and safety consulting company specializing in wilderness medicine and emergency response, will instruct the course. Henshaw, a Wilderness EMT (WEMT) with over a decade of high-stakes patient care experience, also holds an instructor license with Wilderness Medical Associates International (WMAI).

According to CCHE Program Director Kelsey Kennedy, this will be the second year CCHE has offered this wilderness-based first aid course. “I’m thankful for those who attend this course, it makes our community safer,” she said. A person doesn’t have to get too far off the beaten path to be a long way from an EMT. The result of this and other first aid training offered by CCHE is that more people will be able to provide emergency aid to support, help, and stabilize a person during a medical crisis.

The course teaches patient assessment and emergency care, along with splinting and care for fractures, sprains, and strains. One section trains participants to manage temperature-related illnesses, respond to lightning strikes, and handle submersion injuries. The training helps participants recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of serious medical conditions.

The program costs $299.00. At registration, you can receive a 50% scholarship, reducing the price to $149.50. The tuition includes lunch both days and all necessary materials.
