Christmas Tableaux Celebrates its 10th Year

For the past 10 years, local actors have gathered at the United Church of Two Harbors for the annual Christmas Tableaux. Directed by Katya Gordon, the Tableaux features participants from all denominations, making a truly ecumenical Christmas gathering.

A tableaux features actors who, instead of moving and speaking their parts, freeze in position for their scene while it is read. This lends itself to a more dramatic and contemplative performance. The Christmas Tableaux tells the story of the birth of Jesus, as found in the New Testament. It begins with the angel Gabriel’s visit to Zacharias and Elisabeth, informing them that they will become the parents of John the Baptist. The scene changes to the Annunciation, followed by a young woman singing the “Magnificat” live. A musical interlude and Scripture reading accompany each scene. Scenes include the journey to Bethlehem, birth of Jesus, angels and shepherds, the presentation of Jesus in the temple, Simeon and Anna, King Herod, the magi, the edict decreeing the massacre of the Jewish infants, and Mary and Joseph’s return to Israel with the child Jesus.

The Christmas Tableaux will be held on Friday, December 20th, at 5:00 p.m. and is 45 minutes in length. Children and families are welcome to attend, and there is no cost for admittance. Following the tableaux, United Church will be hosting a free community dinner with the theme of “What Jesus Ate”. Red lentil chickpea stew, flatbread, olives, and almonds will be served. More singers are needed and are welcome to join. If you are interested in participating in the Christmas Tableaux, contact Katya Gordon for more details by calling or texting (218) 290-5975, or emailing katyagordon69@gmail.com.

Haley Searls
Hello! My name is Haley Searls. I’ve loved writing from an early age, though my nonfiction writing at five years old consisted mainly of weather and gardening reports. I still have some of those early articles: “It’s sunny.” “It’s still sunny.” “It’s raining.” I’m glad to say my writing has improved since then. I wrote a guest post for the Silver Bay Public Library blog, and was the writer/editor of the newsletter for my American Heritage Girls troop. I have been writing for the North Shore Journal since June 2022. Besides writing, I love reading, drawing, photography, music, and spending time with family and friends. Two books that have really influenced my writing are Reforming Journalism by Marvin Olasky and Writer to Writer by Bodie and Brock Thoene. As a journalist, I want to share positive community interactions and inspire people to make lasting connections. Article topics that interest me are ones which show community activities and involvement. Such articles include community events, youth accomplishments, library programming, small businesses, local history, local artists and authors, art programs, and cultural events such as theater and dance. If you have an article idea, email the North Shore Journal with my name in the subject line! I look forward to hearing from you!
