Despite toasty times, July in general should be a little cool

My colleague Brandon Pham is a neat, young meteorologist. He’s from the East Coast, so the Upper Midwest is a new experience for him. He’s taken to it pretty well, though, because he is a surfer in the Atlantic. He’s already joined those rough and tumble north coast surfers who brave the chill of Lake Superior to ride her waves. So, he is used to our cold weather.

That tendency towards chilly conditions had him second guessing a recent forecast. The models showed us getting into the mid and upper 80’s. I had to assure him it can happen around here if only for a short time. On that note, July should start warmer than normal even though the whole month may average a degree cooler than normal. Rainfall may come up an inch short, too.

The July forecast should run sunny and hot from the first to the fourth. The heat could lift up thunderstorms from late Independence Day through the tenth, but temps will cool as early as the sixth. The 11th to 20th may stay on the cool side, but storms may be possible even with hot convection from hot days. The rest of the month will warm up and continue to fuel scattered thunderstorm chances.

Happy 250th birthday, everyone! I hope to still be writing weather in 50 more years. I’ll only be 112 so there is a vague chance…
