Two Harbors City Council kicked off their first meeting of the year with the swearing in of new Council member Todd Redmann, who will represent Ward 4. Also taking the oath of office were Cathy Erickson, who will continue to represent Ward 3 and Lew Conner who will continue to serve as Mayor. The Council members then elected Uriah Hefter as Council President and Robin Glaser as Council Vice President.
There has been a significant number of ongoing projects to upgrade city amenities and infrastructure in Two Harbors over the past many months. These include the Wastewater Treatment Plant Project, the Chlorine Tank and Building Project, the Taxilane Reconstruction Project, Terminal Building Reconstruction Project and the Beacon Replacement Project at the Airport.
The Breakwall Bottle Shoppe (Municipal Liquor Store), opened for business on January 9th and early reports are that area residents are liking what they see and are impressed with the expanded space and inventory. The new Airport Terminal is expected to be open for business in March and when the winter months are in the rear-view mirror, work will start up on the Street Seal Coat Project, the Lighthouse Road Project, plus continued work on improving area streets.
A plan is in place for City Hall to get a facelift. DSGW Architectural Design, out of Duluth, will be developing design options for presentation to the Council in the future.
The Library Committee reported that 3500 area residents attended various activities offered by Library staff over the course of the year. Book lovers are reminded that ‘Books & Brews’ is offered every third Tuesday of the month at Castle Danger Brewery from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This event is sponsored by the Two Harbors Public Library and the Brewery. Interested residents are invited to “bring a book you are currently reading and chat with fellow book lovers. No specific genre, no specific title. Anything you are reading! Every book lover who brings their book to chat about will receive $1 off your first beer”!
The Two Harbors HRA is working on a joint powers agreement between the City and the Lake County HRA. This agreement will help streamline the efforts of both entities as they work to develop needed housing opportunities in Two Harbors.
In a nod to Summer, the Council voted to authorize Cheryl Sundstrom, Heritage Days Chair, to apply for grants and to solicit donations for Heritage Days 2025. The Council also voted to designate the Lake County Press as the City’s official newspaper.
The next Two Harbors Council meeting will be held on January 27th at 5:30 PM.
