A Success Story in Protecting Northshore Small Businesses
Minnesota is a state that thrives on its values and connection to the land. Nowhere is that spirit more alive than on the Northshore, where Maple Hill Sugarbush & Farm has been producing high-quality maple syrup for generations. As the State Senator representing this community, I take pride in supporting local businesses like Maple Hill that embody our shared heritage while contributing to the economy of our rural areas.
Recently, Maple Hill Sugarbush & Farm faced an existential threat when the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) proposed restrictions on their permit to tap maple syrup. These restrictions would have jeopardized their ability to continue their operations—and with it, a tradition that means so much to our region. Given how civically engaged and tight knit our Northshore communities are, it was no surprise that my office started hearing from people all throughout the region asking for support for Maple Hill and its owners, Mark and Melinda Spinler. Once I understood the issue, I elevated the issue quickly.
Through collaboration with the DNR and local stakeholders, I am pleased to report that we achieved some good news for Maple Hill Sugarbush & Farm. Initially, it was expected that Maple Hill would be required to remove their tapping equipment by the end of 2024, but that is no longer the case. This will allow them to continue their operations into 2025 while we work on crafting a long-term solution that protects the rights of family-run businesses like Maple Hill.
This issue goes beyond maple syrup. It is a reminder of the delicate balance between regulation and supporting rural economies. Maple Hill Sugarbush & Farm is not just a business; it is a symbol of the resilience, innovation, and resourcefulness that defines Northern Minnesota. That is why I am committed to advancing policies that support our rural communities, and it is why I launched my Northland Strong Initiative last year.
The Northland Strong Initiative is a vision for ensuring Minnesota remains a ‘State That Works’ for everyone, including rural communities. It focuses on four other key tenants as well, from fostering strong families and safe communities, to building a robust local economy through innovation and protecting our outdoor heritage. Supporting family-run operations like Maple Hill aligns perfectly with this initiative because it preserves our heritage, supports local jobs, and strengthens the fabric of our communities.
As we move forward, I pledge to continue advocating for policies that uplift rural communities while ensuring responsible stewardship of our natural resources. The success of Maple Hill Sugarbush & Farm underscores the importance of this work. Together, we can ensure that businesses like this not only survive but thrive for generations to come.
To the residents of the Northshore and beyond, thank you for your continued support of Maple Hill Sugarbush & Farm and our rural economy. It is an honor to serve as your State Senator and to stand with you in protecting the traditions that make Minnesota special. Let’s remain Northland Strong — a testament to our values, our resilience, and our commitment to each other.
