I haven’t seen the Barbie movie, but Barbie-Pink is definitely a color that is unmistakable. The color splashed up everywhere at the football game last Friday, October 6th. Most evidently, the cheerleaders weren’t adorned in their usual maroon and white uniforms. They wore pink toile skirts and cheered with pink pom poms in the air. The logo on the shirts still said Agates, but the team’s name took the form of the Barbie logo. Students joined in the fun and many of the football players sported a bit of pink in solidarity.
It was the second quarter by the time I made it to the game. Walking past a photo booth set up to make it look like you are in a Barbie doll box, I headed up the bleachers with the scoreboard reading 0-0. I did sit up top, and I am pretty slow on the bleachers due to being terrified of slipping, but somehow by the time I took my seat it was 7-0.
#18 Zack Libal, a junior, ran a 21-yard gain, scoring a touchdown. #15 Zack Johnson, a sophomore, kicked the extra point. In just a few more minutes, #10 Tate Nelson, a junior, would score a touchdown for a 50-yard gain. #15 Zack Johnson was able to bring in the extra point. Just before the second quarter ended, junior #18 Zack Libal scored another touchdown and his teammate, #15 Zack Johnson kicked his 3rd good field goal of the quarter. The score was 21-0 Two Harbors going into halftime.
The cheerleaders performed a routine to Aqua’s Barbie Girl, a song that has been in my head for too long now, especially since I don’t know the words. (Are there a lot of words or is it all chorus? Don’t tell me and I’m not looking it up.) Afterwards, moms from both teams, including Angie Nelson and Kristi Loisel, took the field to do some drills with an oversized inflatable football. In the stands, even the announcers agreed, we weren’t really sure what was going on, but it was fun to watch. The Two Harbors Agates moms were also selling lemonade and merch to support Youth Football. Thank you to the moms and all they do!
Rock Ridge scored about halfway through the 3rd, when a nice pass and a 37-yard gain resulted in a touchdown. Their 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. A little over a minute later in play, Two Harbors Agate #25 Isaiah Hietala, a senior, scored a touchdown after we, or at least those around me, thought he already had in the previous play. #15 Zack Johnson kicked again, and again gave the Agates an extra point. The 3rd ended with a 6-28 score.
The Agates and their placekicker were not done quite yet. In the 4th quarter, #11 Jacob Carpenter ran two touchdowns and #15 Zack Johnson didn’t disappoint. His 6th kick was also deemed “good.” The final score was 42-6, Two Harbors.
With another home game this Friday the 13th, can we expect some aptly costumed students? I hope so. Good luck to the Agates as they take on the Pine City Dragons at Stadium Field!
