Pumpkin season is one of the best seasons. Pumpkins start showing up on porches and Pinterest long before Halloween night, each proudly displaying a personality that may offer a hint about the person who carefully, or chaotically, carved it.
When my husband chose three big ol’ pumpkins for our porch this season, I thought maybe he picked them for the size of the canvas he’d have to work with. The bigger the pumpkin, the bigger the piece of art. But no, he had other things in mind. He hopes the bigger they are, the more seeds he’ll get for the roasting.
He’s the pumpkin artist in the family, so we’ll see what he comes up with this season. Meanwhile, I got to thinking about what a person’s pumpkin might say about their personality. Here’s what the interwebs believe. I think they might be on to something.
The Traditional Triangler
This pumpkin belongs to someone who trusts ye olde ways. Triangle eyes. A wide grin. A steady hand that has carved the same face since they were kids. They like routines that work and tools that last. You can almost hear them say, “I’ve been doing it like this forever.”
They’re dependable, practical, and quietly proud of traditions that don’t need updating. Their personality leans toward reliability. They’re the kind of person who shows up early, remembers birthdays, and keeps the household running on time.
The Porchside Picasso
This gourd glows like a small masterpiece. Shading and careful cuts create maybe a lighthouse or a wolf silhouette. The person behind it is patient and quietly competitive. They’re the type who brings the fancy desserts to potlucks and shrugs when people ask how they made them. They tilt their head at the finished pumpkin and say, “I think it needs one more detail.”
Their personality is observant and meticulous. They notice things others miss. They’re creative, thoughtful, and often the unofficial photographer at family gatherings because they see beauty in small moments.
The Craft-Store Commander
Stenciled, painted, drilled, or sometimes all three, this pumpkin has been fussed over in the best possible way. The person behind it owns a glue gun and uses it with confidence. They’re determined to carve out time for one more detail. They step back from the porch, squint a little, and say, “It’s cute, but I can make it cuter.”
Their personality is enthusiastic and generous. They love making things special. They’re the type who organizes group gifts, labels storage bins, and has a seasonal playlist ready before anyone else.
The Gourd Minimalist
One uncarved pumpkin sitting next to a tasteful white gourd. This porch belongs to someone who likes calm spaces and knows their favorite brand of tea. Their house looks tidy even on a Tuesday. They don’t need a lot to mark the season. The pumpkin sits there like a quiet nod to October. They’re the type who says, “I like things simple.”
Their personality leans toward clarity and calm. They’re steady, thoughtful, and good at creating peaceful spaces. They’re the friend who listens well and keeps a clean calendar.
The Chaos Jack-O-Lanterner
Lopsided. Goofy. Maybe missing a tooth. Seeds everywhere. A candle that leans. This pumpkin was carved fast and with laughter. The person behind it doesn’t worry about the mess or let perfection squash their fun. They’re impulsive and always the first to say yes to a last-minute bonfire. You can imagine them saying, “It’s fine, it has character.”
Their personality is spontaneous and warm. They’re the type who tells good stories, laughs loudly, and makes even ordinary nights feel like memories.
The Panic-at-the-Pumpkin Carver
Seeds flying. Kids already zipping jackets over their costumes. A kitchen knife doing a job it wasn’t designed for. The grin ends up delightfully crooked. This pumpkin belongs to someone who is busy, good-natured, and always game to pull something together when the clock is running out. They laugh at the finished pumpkin and say, “Well, it’ll do.”
Their personality is flexible and forgiving. They juggle a lot, care deeply, and show up even when they’re stretched thin. They’re the person who brings bars still warm from the oven because they baked them between everything else.
The Fall-Festival Fanatic
With five pumpkins, three or more gourds, a hay bale or two, and maybe a scarecrow, this porch is enthusiastic, seasonal, and deeply committed to cozy vibes. The person behind it knows exactly when the leaves will peak. They probably have a favorite cider recipe. They’re the type who says, “I just love this time of year.”
Their personality is warm and welcoming. They’re the host, the planner, the one who makes holidays feel like holidays. They’re generous with decorations and generous in general.
Pumpkins, of course, don’t tell the whole story, but they may offer a glimpse. If left to my own devices, I’d probably be somewhere between a Traditional Triangler and a Chaos JackOLanterner, though I’d secretly wish to be a FallFestival Fanatic. Someday. For now, I’ll just admire the neighborhood pumpkins and hope my porchside Picasso of a husband carves something truly gourd-geous this year. I’ll be in charge of roasting the seeds.
