Greg “Shovel” VanDenHeuvel

Shovel VanDenHeuvel passed away March 12, 2023. He was 71 years old. He was born September 24, 1951 in Chippewa Falls, WI to Richard and Harriet VanDen­Heuvel. Shovel worked for the county as a supervisor for the Hwy. Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and loved spending time with his family. He was also a MN Vikings fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Harriet VanDenHeuvel, and fa­ther-in-law Kenneth Gumtow.

Shovel is survived by his loving wife Mary Jane of 50 years of Silver Bay, MN; daughters, Nicole VanDenHeuvel of Silver Bay and Tara VanDenHeuvel of St. Paul, MN, mother-in-law Lucille Gumtow of Florida, brother-in-laws Bob (Natalie) and Bill Gumtow of Florida, brothers Larry Van­DenHeuvel (Sharen) of Proctor, MN and Todd VanDenHeuvel (Patti) of Two Har­bors; Four grandchildren, Michael Marisa (Zack) of Superior, Macaiden of Superior, and Amara, and two great-grandchildren Maverick and Clayre.

Shovel was well known for his cooking abilities and his fish cakes were almost fa­mous. He also made homemade sauerkraut, and made many quarts of various pickles over the years. Shovel was one of the hard­est workers and had an excellent work eth­ic. He accomplished much in his lifetime. He also enjoyed wintering in Texas.

A gathering of friends and family will be held in the near future to honor Shovel.
