NEIL MCGIVERIN (December 4, 1933 – April 14, 2023)

Neil McGiverin, 89 of Two Harbors died April 14, 2023. Neil was born December 4, 1933 to David & Carrie McGiverin. His father was in the coast guard and his family frequently moved until Neil was in the 7th grade, where the family settled in Grand Marais, MN. After his High School graduation, Neil joined the Marines & was stationed in Korea & Japan where he earned the rank Sargent. Neil met his wife Kay Elizabeth and married on February 23, 1962, and celebrated 61 years of marriage living in Two Harbors having three children Kimberly, Kristine and Todd.

Neil went to school at UMD and UWS and graduated with a masters in education. Neil was an elementary teacher for 30 years in Two Harbors and loved his profession. So many wonderful stories have been told about Neil from his students over the years and how he was amongst a favorite teach-er. His students always tell the story of Neil reading, “The Little Blue Man”.

Neil loved nature and was a very skilled outdoorsman. For many summers Neil enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with students on canoe trips into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Neil loved to be on the open water and was a good captain taking friends and family on many Lake Superior boating trip. Neil loved fishing with his kids and friends through summers & winters. He also loved cards and he had a great group of friends meeting regularly for a night of fun. Neil was an easy going person, loved to laugh and joke and was a very devoted caring father. He built the family home 51 years ago with a book in one hand and a tool in the other and was proud to have raised a family in the home he built.

Neil is survived by his wife Kay, daughter Kimberly Schultz now living in River Falls, WI, daughter Kristine Forbes (preceded in death) and Todd McGiverin living in Bellingham, WA. He leaves behind son Todd and his wife Heidi Bode and daughter Kimberly Schultz and husband Shawn and seven grandchildren: Dr. Autumn Jordan, Paige Pearson Johnson (Andrew Johnson), Alex Pearson, Sierra Forbes, Tyler McGiverin, Zachary McGiverin, and Colin McGiverin as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family, friends and neighbors. Neil loved being a grandparent and was hoping to meet his great grandchild in June. Neil will be greatly missed and was so dearly loved by his family.

Services will be held at United Church 531 3rd Ave, Two Harbors on April 22, 2023 at 5 PM.
