MICHAEL BUSTROM (August 20, 1945 – October 2, 2023)

Michael Bustrom, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, left us on October 2, 2023, at the age of 79. Born on August 20, 1945, Mike lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts of many with his warmth, wisdom, humor, and straightforwardness.

From an early age, Mike immersed himself in the outdoors, finding solace and joy in hunting, trapping, and fishing. These pursuits weren’t merely hobbies but reflections of his deep respect for nature and his skill as a provider. He passed down these traditions to his children and grandchildren, teaching invaluable lessons about patience, respect for wildlife, and the importance of conservation.

Married to his beloved wife, Jacquelyn, for 59 and a half years, Dad cherished their partnership deeply. Together, they raised two children, Kirk (Victoria) Bustrom and Heidi (Chad) Frantz. Dad’s role as a father and grandfather brought him immense joy. He adored his six grandchildren: Brian, Alec (Jillian), Kate (Lee) Bustrom, Logan, and Bailey (Nicole) Frantz, and great grandchild Archer Frantz.

Dad was committed to education, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) in 1969. He then embarked on a career for the next 5 years as an industrial arts teacher in Winter, WI, where his dedication to teaching and his love for woodworking inspired countless students.

He then ventured into entrepreneurship with his good friend John Haveri to establish Bustrom/Haveri Construction. Throughout his life, Michael’s love for building and woodworking was evident as he crafted homes in Two Harbors, Brimson, Ely, Pike Lake, and even a sauna in Minong.

His craftsmanship and attention to detail were admired by all who witnessed his work. Ambitious and driven, Michael later pursued a master’s degree in industrial safety and hygiene, graduating in 1986. He then dedicated many years to ensuring workplace safety as a respected safety inspector for Wausau Insurance and later through his own consulting firm, MJ Consulting.

His expertise earned him the role of chief safety OSHA consultant for prominent companies in Duluth, such as Johnson/Wilson and Hoover. After a successful career, Mike and his beloved wife, Jacquelyn (Jackie), enjoyed an early retirement, spending the last 25 years taking winters off in various locations such as Ely, MN, Rockport, TX, and Surprise, AZ.

Together, they created cherished memories and explored new adventures. A Celebration of Life will be held for Mike and Jackie at Red Swan Catering & Event Center, North Shore Drive, Duluth on Saturday, June 29 at 1:00 PM.
