James L. Gilbert, Sr, age 74, died April 28, 2023 at his home in Alamogordo, New Mexico after a short battle with cancer.
He was born June 10, 1948 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Jim and Jean (Solberg) Gilbert. He grew up in Wales (Brimson) Minnesota until he entered the Army on May 3, 1968. He served for 7 years, 18 months of which were in Vietnam, and received an “early out” of the military to pursue his career as a Minnesota State Trooper. After retiring from 34 years on the Minnesota State Patrol, he drove truck for Halvor Lines until he retired to Alamogordo, New Mexico in 2011.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Jim and Jean Gilbert; brothers, Jack Gilbert and Joe Gilbert.
He is survived by his children; James (Ann) Gilbert, Jr., Gordon Gilbert, Ashley (Brandon) Lambe; grandchildren Maggie (Andy) Morris, Duke Gilbert, Kennedy Gilbert, Kaylee Gilbert, Evan (Jess) Checkalski, Lila Gilbert, Gretta Gilbert, and Cian Lambe; great grandchild; Oaklyn; a sister, Jean (Jack) Juntenen; brothers, Jerry (Jayne) and Jay Gilbert; sisters-in-law, Maria and Zeola Gilbert; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a small gathering for family and close friends held June 10, 2023 from 4pm to 6pm at the home of Jim and Ann Gilbert. SP 49 is 10-7.
