Following a weeks-long battle against lightning-sparked wildfires, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved a formal declaration of a local emergency during a special meeting on Monday.
The emergency declaration allows the county to officially request state public emergency and disaster assistance. It also opens the door for the county to pursue financial reimbursement for the mounting costs incurred during fire response operations.
The fires originated from a series of severe lightning strikes on July 6, which ignited blazes both within Cook County and across adjacent wilderness areas in the Arrowhead region.
Local public safety officials are coordinating with regional and federal agencies to manage the shifting threat. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management teams are managing unified response operations alongside the U.S. Forest Service, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and neighboring St. Louis and Lake counties.
The response has also drawn the activation of the newly established National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) team, a specialized federal unit deployed to manage complex, large-scale wildfire incidents.
During the special session, the county administrator and commissioners praised the cross-departmental effort required to keep up with the developing situation. Leadership explicitly credited the shifting workloads within the Sheriff’s Office, the local Community Center, Public Health and Human Services, Facilities, Management Information Systems, and county administration, as well as coordination with the Grand Portage Band.
“Commissioners also extended a thank you to community members for taking care of one another and for the support,” the county stated following the vote.
