Lake County Public Health and Aspirus Lake View hosted a Bike Rodeo in Silver Bay on May 6th with around 40 kids and adults attending the event. Bike mechanics Dan Cruikshank & Summer Goebel from SpokenGear and Asa Jacobs from William Kelley Schools provided brake, handlebar and gear adjustments, filled up tires and cleaned & lubed chains. Each kid tested out their finely tuned-up bicycle on the skills course provided.
Each kid who needed one was fitted for a free helmet, which then they were able use their creative imagination and decorate it with markers and stickers. Finally, all the participants, parents & volunteers got to have dinner.
Kids left the rodeo with stronger biking skills, a tuned-up bicycle and a safe helmet so they are ready to spend the summer biking safely around town.
Physical activity was a priority area identified in Lake County Public Health & Aspirus Lake View’s Community Health Needs Assessment in 2023, and this encouragement event is one way they are working towards a more active county.
The bike rodeo was made possible thanks to in-kind & volunteer support from Aspirus Lake View, SpokenGear, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Silver Bay Police Department, Northland Adaptive, Arrowhead Regional Development Commission, and Zup’s Food Market. Funding was provided by North Shore Federal Credit Union, J&H Towing & Auto Repair, CLP’s Operation Roundup, Statewide Health Improvement Partnership, and Lovin’ Lake County.
