North Shore Area Partners Champions Cognitive Wellness with “Brain Health Week”

From June 1st through June 4th, 2026, North Shore Area Partners (NSAP) hosted its “Brain Health Week.” The event was designed to provide local seniors with actionable tips and tools to improve and maintain cognitive health.

As the saying goes, “If it’s good for your heart, it’s good for your brain.” Research shows that we can actively reduce the risk of cognitive decline by managing daily environmental and lifestyle factors.

Top Tips for Maintaining Brain Health:

• Stay on top of health screenings: Keep regular appointments with your doctor.

• Manage chronic conditions: Keep an eye on issues like diabetes or high blood pressure.

• Limit alcohol and nicotine: Reducing intake significantly supports long-term brain health.

• Prioritize sleep: Ensure you are getting enough high-quality rest each night.

• Eat a nutrient-dense diet: Choose foods low in animal fats but high in vitamins and fiber.

Throughout the week, community members gathered for a series of insightful presentations. Jenna Pogorels from the Alzheimer’s Association MNND Chapter kicked things off with her presentation, “Building Brain-Healthy Habits.”

Later in the week, Lareesa Sandretsky (Community Health Educator) and John Overly (Public Health Nurse) from Lake County Health and Human Services discussed the deep connection between heart health and dementia risk. They shared vital information on managing blood pressure and cholesterol, and John even provided free, on-request blood pressure checks for attendees.

To wrap up the week, NSAP hosted The Virtual Dementia Tour: Your Window into Their World. Created by geriatric specialist P.K. Beville as part of her post-graduate work, this scientifically proven, patented program temporarily alters participants’ physical and sensory abilities. By simulating the daily changes associated with cognitive decline, the tour builds deep sensitivity and awareness for caregivers. This powerful experience has been utilized by major organizations worldwide, including the CDC, Google, and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

While this was NSAP’s official “Brain Health Week,” the organization regularly offers educational programming. With continued funding, NSAP hopes to make Brain Health Week an annual tradition alongside other community-requested topics. “Brain Health Week” was made possible by a generous grant from The Victory Fund.

How Can You Give Back?

Become a Volunteer Driver: NSAP’s incredibly popular Transportation Program has recently expanded! They now provide rides not just to medical appointments (from Silver Bay all the way to Duluth/Superior), but also for local errands, grocery shopping, and social engagements. This program bridges a massive gap for rural residents, but more volunteer drivers are urgently needed to help share the load and keep the program running smoothly.

Have a different talent? NSAP also welcomes volunteers who want to teach a one-time workshop, lead an ongoing class, or host a wellness activity. If you see a need in the community and want to fill it, contact Ericka Blanchard, LSW, to pitch your ideas.

NSAP is actively growing its Home Care Program and is currently hiring. If you are interested in joining the team, you can stop by the office to pick up an application or email keri@ nsapartners.org.

Ways to Support NSAP Financially

As NSAP navigates shifting funding streams, community support is more critical than ever. The organization is incredibly grateful to the many local residents who have stepped up financially, including those who choose to honor loved ones through memorial bequests.
