Just for Kix Attends Competitions

March 1st marked the first competition of the year for Just for Kix, a youth dance program in Two Harbors. The Wee Kix (2nd- 3rd grade) and Mini Kix (4th grade and up) classes attended a Together We Dance: Just for Kix competition in Brainerd, MN. Just for Kix, Two Harbors usually competes in two competitions annually.

The goal of the Together We Dance competitions is “The Pursuit of Excellence”. Cindy and Steve Clough, the founders of Just for Kix, say on the competition website, “We always strive for our students to better their best.”

The Wee Kix dancers scored high gold, and the Mini Kix dancers scored both high gold and won third place. “This was so exciting for our first competition of the year,” Just for Kix Program Director Jaclyn Koehler said. “We were up against some great teams, so it was fun to place at our first competition of the year!”

On April 1st, Just for Kix attended a Together We Dance: Just for Kix competition in Apple Valley. Wee Kix scored high gold, and Mini Kix scored both high gold and fourth place. “Both teams did great and improved their scores,” Koehler said. “It was a tough competition, but we had a lot of fun!”

Dancer Gwen Fagerland says she loves the “thrill of dancing.” She describes her fellow dancers as “very fun to be around.” No matter where they place, they “always have fun; a lot of positive energy.”

Congratulations to the Two Harbors Just for Kix dancers! Great job representing our area in Brainerd and Apple Valley.

Haley Searls
Hello! My name is Haley Searls. I’ve loved writing from an early age, though my nonfiction writing at five years old consisted mainly of weather and gardening reports. I still have some of those early articles: “It’s sunny.” “It’s still sunny.” “It’s raining.” I’m glad to say my writing has improved since then. I wrote a guest post for the Silver Bay Public Library blog, and was the writer/editor of the newsletter for my American Heritage Girls troop. I have been writing for the North Shore Journal since June 2022. Besides writing, I love reading, drawing, photography, music, and spending time with family and friends. Two books that have really influenced my writing are Reforming Journalism by Marvin Olasky and Writer to Writer by Bodie and Brock Thoene. As a journalist, I want to share positive community interactions and inspire people to make lasting connections. Article topics that interest me are ones which show community activities and involvement. Such articles include community events, youth accomplishments, library programming, small businesses, local history, local artists and authors, art programs, and cultural events such as theater and dance. If you have an article idea, email the North Shore Journal with my name in the subject line! I look forward to hearing from you!
