Inaugural Community Baby Shower set for Sept. 19 at Cook County Community Center

GRAND MARAIS — Local early childhood organizations are teaming up to support new and growing families across Cook County with a first-of-itskind Community Baby Shower on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The free event will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Cook County Community Center, located at 317 W 5th St. in Grand Marais. Families with children ranging from prenatal to preschool age are invited to drop in at any time without registering.

Designed as both a resource fair and a community gathering, the event features free food, dropin activities, and a chance for local parents to connect. A centerpiece of the shower is a “free swap” area where families can pass along or pick up gently used baby and toddler clothes, maternity wear, and gear. Organizers noted that parents do not need to bring items in order to take items home.

Beyond the swap, attendees can browse a wide array of local early childhood services and topics, including:

Healthcare & Safety: Car seat safety, family home visiting, prenatal care, childbirth education, chiropractors, and the Oral Health Task Force.

Education & Programs: Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), early childhood screenings, Sawtooth Mountain Preschool, Grand Portage Head Start, Music Together classes, early literacy programs, and the Help Me Grow program.

Community Resources: WIC, University of Minnesota Extension, County Children and Family Social Services, Cook County YMCA, and local teen babysitter connections.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to enter drawings for early childhood-themed door prizes.

Organizers hope the gathering will help bridge gaps for young families navigating parenthood in the region.

“Starting a family in a rural place can be an isolating experience, and we want to make sure families know about the supports available to them here,” said Angie Works, Parent Child Health Nurse at Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and one of the event organizers. “We hope families will take home a renewed sense of the many ways our community is here to support them as they welcome new babies and navigate those early childhood years.”

While dozens of agencies have already signed up, space remains for additional community groups. Organizations interested in hosting a booth or activity can contact Sarah Waddle, UMN Extension Educator, at swaddle@umn.edu or 218-387-3015.
