The Library partners with the Violence Prevention Center in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Grand Marais, MN, April 2, 2024 — The Grand Marais Public Library is partnering with the Violence Prevention Center to screen the film Women Talking on Friday, April 19, from 6:00-8:30 PM.
In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Violence Prevention Center and the Library are resolved to raise awareness for victims and survivors of sexual assault. Based on a true story, Women Talking (2022: PG-13) is about a group of Mennonite women who have endured repeated sexual assault and must decide how to respond: do nothing, stay and fight, or flee. It tells a timeless tale of courage, hope, and healing that will leave you speechless and make you think long after the end credits.
As its title suggests, much of the film is dialogue between the women of this isolated religious community, trying to reconcile their faith with reality, forgiveness with acceptance, and abuse with love. This film contains mature thematic content including sexual assault, suicide, child sexual abuse, miscarriage, forced pregnancy, domestic violence, spiritual abuse, and some strong language. While the movie does not show sexual violence explicitly on screen, it does show its aftermath, which may be triggering for some audience members.
Violence Prevention Center staff advocates Lindsey and Jessica will be on hand to lead a discussion after the film. This movie is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5:30. Non-alcoholic drinks with lids are welcome. Light snacks will be provided.
In other news, the library will also be screening Mayor Humphrey of Minneapolis at 6:00 PM on April 17, with discussion led by producer Mick Caouette. For more information about our programs, call the library at 218-387-1140.
