The other day, a person drove down my street in a vehicle that was both annoyingly loud and beautifully appointed. You could hear him coming from five blocks away and when he rounded the corner the source of the rumble was a beautifully rebuilt automobile, probably from the early 70s. It had a gorgeous electric blue finish and a shiny chrome plated carburetor peeking through the hood. I am not a car guy (hence, I didn’t notice what type of car it was) but I must admit that the car was something of a work of art. Car culture is a global phenomenon dedicated to the love of cars based on their beauty, functionality, and innovative design.
Perhaps a new feature to the car culture phenomenon is coming to Silver Bay this summer. ArtCar will be staged at the Black Beach Mini Golf Course and will feature the work of artists who use cars as background for their creative work. Phil Huston was on hand at this week’s City Council meeting to talk about the event. Huston said he expects between 10 and 12 cars, decorated by Minnesota artists, to be at the event. The ArtCars will be on display from 11 to 5 on August 19th.
The annual Bay Days celebration is being held from July 7th through the 9th. In addition to the regular features like food vendors, the Bay to Bay Run, Bean Bag Tournament, Classic Car Show, Parade, live music and Fireworks, this year’s festivities will have a Trampoline, Bungy Jump, a BMX Bike Show and Scottish Highland Games. As always, Bay Days offers a wide variety of fun for the whole family.
The Boathouse Bay development project was on the Council’s agenda on the 2nd. Like many other development projects, the recreational, residential development has run into some snags due to inflation and supply chain challenges. The Planning and Zoning Commission will be considering options to get the project back on track and the Council will hold a Public Hearing, on August 7th so that residents can hear about the plan and give input on the project as it moves forward.
The next Silver Bay City Council meeting is scheduled for July 17th at 7:00 p.m.
