Sen. Hauschild Applauds DNR Approval of Mineral Leases
SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL—Hermantown) said that on Thursday afternoon the DNR announced that it will recommend Executive Council approval of new mineral leases for Cleveland-Cliffs at the Hibbing Taconite site near Nashwauk, Minnesota.
“I applaud the DNR and Cleveland-Cliffs for negotiating a fair deal on the Nashwauk leases,” said Senator Hauschild. “After years of missed deadlines, delays, and inaction, we are finally on the cusp of having certainty around this project site.
“Cleveland-Cliffs is a sound company that has the best interests of the Iron Range at heart. They have proven to be good-faith partners and I’m glad that they will continue their investment in our region following approval of this lease. This deal will also extend the life of Hib-Tac and provide much-needed economic benefits to local communities. I encourage members of the Executive Council to approve this deal quickly and with a strong unanimous vote.”
