BOWLING
Silver Bay’s varsity bowling team packed in six matches over the weekend and came home with five wins, taking 21 of the 30 games they bowled. Coach Logan Fischer said the group’s 70 percent game-win rate was one of their strongest showings of the season.
Emsley Fischer led the roster with an 80 percent fill rate across every frame she bowled. The coach said three other bowlers were above the 60 percent mark, giving the lineup a solid core of consistent scorers. Fill rate is the league’s key metric for all-conference selection, and Silver Bay currently has two bowlers in the top 12.
“Emsley is sitting at seventh place in the conference and Gabriel Russell is sitting at eighth,” Fischer said, adding that Emsley is at 71.6 percent and Gabriel is at 71.4.
Silver Bay opened Saturday by winning its first five matches before dropping the final one to what Fischer called the strongest team in the conference. Even so, Silver Bay still holds the league’s high game of the season with the 246 they posted two weeks ago.
“We have the capability; the kids just have to make the marks,” he said.
The roster continues to grow. Silver Bay added another JV bowler this week, bringing the program to nine athletes. Fischer said they need one more to officially field a JV team and qualify a group for state.
The varsity averaged 165 over the weekend, giving Silver Bay the second-highest team average in the conference. Fischer said four bowlers are filling more than 60 percent of their frames, and the remaining athletes have been rotating based on weekly practice performance.
Silver Bay bowls three more matches this Sunday at 10 a.m. in Hibbing. The team will take MEA weekend off before closing the regular season at home on October 24. Fischer said the group is capable of making a postseason run.
“It’s not out of the question,” he said. “This is definitely one of the better teams I’ve coached.”

Silver Bay
Silver Bay dropped its October 1 home match to Cook County in straight sets, falling 3–0 at William Kelley. The Mariners couldn’t quite settle into a rhythm against the Vikings’ pace and never found the swings they needed to extend the match.
Two days later at the Moose Lake tournament, Silver Bay fell 2–0 to Chisholm, 25–18 and 25–16. The Bluestreaks controlled both sets early, and the Mariners spent most of the match trying to chase down points in transition.

Cook County
