Preparing Before You Need Help

CVSOs often hear, “I wish I had known that sooner.”

Whether someone is applying for VA health care, filing a disability claim, planning for retirement, or helping a loved one after the death of a Veteran, the process is almost always easier when preparations begin before there is an urgent need.

Veterans Services often becomes involved during life’s biggest transitions. We help Veterans, families, survivors, and caregivers understand available benefits, prepare applications, explain complex programs, and connect people with resources. Some services can be completed in a single visit, while others may require weeks or even months of follow-up depending on the circumstances.

One thing we cannot do is create more time after an emergency has already begun.

Keeping important documents organized, knowing where your DD-214 is stored, enrolling in VA health care before you need treatment, learning about burial benefits in advance, or simply asking questions early can make an enormous difference later. Preparation reduces stress, prevents unnecessary delays, and gives you more options when important decisions need to be made.

Our office is currently scheduling appointments approximately two weeks in advance. While we always try to assist urgent situations as quickly as possible, we encourage Veterans and family members to contact us before a deadline is approaching or a crisis develops. Calling early gives us more flexibility to gather records, research benefits, and prepare applications without unnecessary pressure.

Many people think a County Veterans Service Officer only helps file VA disability claims. While that is certainly an important part of our work, it represents only one piece of what we do. We also assist with VA health care enrollment, survivor and burial benefits, state Veterans programs, education benefits, home loan guarantee benefits, records requests, referrals to community partners, and many other Veteranrelated questions. Sometimes the best assistance we provide is connecting someone with another organization that is better equipped to meet a specific need.

Our goal is not simply to complete paperwork. It is to ensure every Veteran and family receives the time, attention, and guidance they deserve. A little preparation today often makes tomorrow’s challenges much easier to navigate.

One final reminder about planning ahead: If you prefer to meet in Silver Bay, Veterans Services continues to provide Wednesday office hours by appointment. We recently relocated from the former Mary Mac Service Center to North Shore Area Partners (NSAP), 36 Shopping Center Road. Appointments for either the Two Harbors or Silver Bay office may be scheduled by calling 218-834-8326 or 218-220-6273.

Brad Anderson and Melissa Crandall are the Lake County Veterans Service Officers and can be reached at 218.834.8326 or Vets@adarussell8
