Lake County Sheriff’s Reports: Fatal Fall at Palisade Head, Dramatic Rescue at Caribou River

On Wednesday, May 27, at about 5 p.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a Ranger at Tettegouche State Park that they had found a body on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff at Palisade Head.

The body was identified as Seth Pipho, a resident of Minneapolis.

Pipho was recovered through the efforts of the Sheriff’s Marine Unit and the Rescue Squad. His body was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Anoka County.

As of press time (June 2), officials have not released the medical examiner’s report.

Deputies and the Rescue Squad were called into action Sunday, May 31, when an 88-year-old man who was hiking along the Caribou River fell some 30 feet off a cliff. His fall was stopped by a tree, where he hung on above the water until rescuers arrived.

Lake County’s rescue squad arrived around 1 p.m. and used ropes to effect the rescue. The 88-year-old had only minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises despite the 30-foot fall.
