Senator Grant Hauschild Proposes a $100 Million Property Tax Refund for Minnesotans

A top Senate DFL priority would help an estimated 588,000 households

ST. PAUL, MN. – In Tuesday’s Senate Taxes Committee, Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL-Hermantown) presented his legislation delivering $100 million in property tax refunds to hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans. According to the Minnesota Department of Revenue estimate, Sen. Hauschild’s bill, SF 5010, would provide an average refund increase of $171 to 588,000 homeowners.

“Minnesotans across the state are worried about the rising costs of essential needs in their lives, and they’re looking for help. This bill delivers targeted relief for rising property taxes by providing a significant property tax refund increase for hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans,” said Sen. Hauschild.

Local units of government are facing significant budgetary pressures due to changes in federal policy, leading to sharp increases in property taxes. The League of Minnesota Cities, the Association of Minnesota Counties, and the Minnesota Inter-County Association outlined these challenges in a letter noting the Federal ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ created at least $150 million per year in cost shifts to counties at the administrative level while also reducing federal funds provided to cover SNAP and Medicaid benefits. It also imposed eligibility changes that will require unfunded mandates on county administrative work, withoutaddressing much needed ITimprovements necessary to deliver on those mandates.

Overall, the federal budget bill is expected to result in almost $1 trillion in cost shifts and budget cuts for cities, counties, states, school districts, and other municipalities over the next 10 years.

“While we can’t undo the cruel cuts and policies of the federal government, we can step up with immediate relief that will help Minnesotans who have been hit hard,” said Sen. Hauschild. “We are laser-focused on the ways we can give working Minnesotans help where they need it and providing homeowners with property tax relief is one key part of that.”

Following Sen. Hauschild’s testimony, the bill was laid over for future inclusion in the Senate Tax Bill, which will is expected to be introduced soon by Senate Taxes Chair Ann Rest.
