Hauschild Touts Recent Mining Tax Investments in Silver Bay and Two Harbors
(ST. PAUL, Minn.) – Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL-Hermantown) joined a group of community, business, and labor leaders in a tour of the Cleveland-Cliffs Northshore Mine last Wednesday to learn more about the Mile Post 7 Tailings Basin progression project as part of their on-going Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and standard pellet processing at their Silver Bay plant. “A healthy mining industry is critical to the economic health of communities like Silver Bay and those along the Northshore,” said Sen. Hauschild. “After seeing the project area and meeting with Cleveland Cliffs officials, I feel confident in the tailings basin progression project. We need to support this key industry and the hundreds of good-paying, union jobs that are foundational to our area’s success.”
On Wednesday’s tour, Sen. Hauschild was joined by representatives from the Range Association of Municipalities and Schools, APEX, the Lake County Chamber of Commerce, Lake County officials, Steelworker union members, Silver Bay officials, Representative Roger Skraba and others. Mining plays a critical role in the livelihood of Northern Minnesota, including through local school funding. During the past few Legislative Sessions, Sen. Hauschild secured an additional $8 million in mining dollars bridge the gap for Lake Superior School District’s renovation projects at Minnehaha Elementary in Two Harbors and William Kelley High School in Silver Bay, as well as $6 million in road construction funding for Silver Bay. “I’m proud to have worked to keep our mining dollars in the very communities where mining happens,” added Sen. Hauschild. “It is critical that we use these resources to reinvest in the communities that made this possible in the first place and that we’re making smart investments in our kid’s future and our necessary community infrastructure.”
