June Lake County Housing Report

In a recent meeting, the Lake County Housing and Redevelopment Authority reviewed a number of projects that are in various stages of development.

The project house on 4th Avenue is nearing completion and plans are underway for an open house next month. As a reminder to readers, the project house is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, single family home that is located on property left vacant after the old Two Harbors High School was demolished. When completed, the house will sell at market rate and money from the sale will be returned to the Housing Trust Fund for use on a subsequent building project.

The HRA Board voted to move forward with a proposal to enter into an agreement with Lake County for a property transfer of land in the SEGOG area near Battaglia Blvd. and 14th Avenue. The land in question will be used for a multi-family development consisting of 75 units of mixed income housing. Funding is being sought and it is reported that IRRR is excited about being involved in the project. The complex, as it is currently proposed, will include covered, heated parking and will offer seniors the convenience of less maintenance and upkeep, for those who are interested in selling their current homes. 2% of the units in the development would be ADA (Americans With Disabilities) accessible and all units will have access to elevators.

The Home Rehabilitation Program is slated to begin in July. The Lake County HRA will provide up to $10,000 to eligible homeowners to help with fixing health and safety issues at their owner occupied, single family residence. The goal of this program is to provide assistance to homeowners who have limited income and resources for upkeep. There is a simple application and approval process for interested homeowners. Eligible projects include ADA accessibility needs, lead paint abatement, electrical, plumbing and heating repairs, roofing and foundation repairs, window, exterior door and insulation replacement, repairing missing siding or paint, and replacing failing sewer and water connections. Interested applicants must meet household income limits, have a work plan approved by the Lake County HRA and work with a licensed contractor. My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
