Three local groups—from Cook County and Two Harbors—were among the latest recipients of the Northland Foundation’s Youth In Philanthropy (YIP) grants. The long-running program offers students hands-on experience in community giving.
Students aren’t just applicants—they also help review and approve grants as part of the youth-led board.
The YIP Board includes students from high schools across northeast Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. This spring, the board awarded eight grants totaling $7,380—including three projects in Grand Marais and Two Harbors.
- Cook County Schools ISD 166, Grand Marais – $1,000
A student gardening project will enhance the appearance of the school sign area while encouraging teamwork and school pride.
- Two Harbors Soccer Club, Two Harbors – $1,000
Local student athletes will benefit from a mentoring and coaching program designed to support the “whole athlete”—mind, body, and spirit.
- Robo Dweebs 5501, Two Harbors: $1,000
To support the purchase of new technology for the LEGO Robotics team.
All projects were envisioned and carried out by youth, with support from adult mentors. As part of the YIP process, applicants must outline their plans, budgets, volunteer needs, and goals. Their proposals are then reviewed and voted on by peers serving on the YIP board.
“Young people really care about their communities,” stated Jan Amys, a Senior Program Officer at the Foundation who leads the program. “Youth In Philanthropy connects them with the responsibilities and rewards of volunteer service and community giving.”
Since launching in 2000, YIP has awarded 620 grants totaling more than $510,000. Youth from over 32 different communities have served on the board. The 2024-25 Board included students from Aitkin, Barnum, Cherry, Cloquet, Duluth, Hermantown, Superior, and Two Harbors.
The YIP program is supported by donors including the Scott and Holly Martin Family Foundation and members of the Northland Foundation’s Emeritus Trustee Group. Applications are accepted three times per year, with the next deadline on October 1, 2025.
“We are so proud of what children and youth accomplish year after year and are excited about what the future holds,” Amys said.
