Grand Marais, Minn. 05/19/2025 — Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive insect that has been impacting ash trees in Minnesota for over 30 years. EAB has been confirmed in 56 counties in the state. Though it has not been confirmed in Cook County yet, its presence in neighboring Lake County and over the Canadian border in Thunder Bay has residents and natural resource professionals in Cook County concerned that it will be found soon in our area.
There are multiple events being offered in June to raise awareness of the impacts of EAB and educate community members on how to prevent the spread of EAB. Cook County UMN Extension is hosting an EAB Early Detection workshop on Friday June 20 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at the Cook County Community Center. Presenters from the MN Dept of Agriculture will share information about how to identify, report, and manage EAB. This workshop is free and open to anyone interested. Pre-registration is requested at z.umn.edu/EAB-CookCounty.
The Cook County Invasives Team is a group of cooperating agencies and organizations working together to manage invasive species. The Cook County Invasives Team will be hosting an educational event at Voyageur Brewing in Grand Marais on Saturday June 21 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. At the event, attendees can learn about various invasive species impacting Cook County, participate in family friendly activities and games, and even purchase limited release “Emerald Ash Beer” Blonde Ale at the brewery. This event serves to raise awareness of the impacts of invasive species locally and teach both visitors and residents how to do their part in preventing the spread of damaging invasive species. All are welcome to drop in to this family-friendly event.
