Tettegouche Hosts Annual Ice Fishing Program

Good weather and rapidly improving ice conditions lent to a successful ice fishing day hosted by Tettegouche State Park. Eight attendees were introduced to the basic equipment of ice fishing.

Since December 2014, ice fishing has been an annual program offered at Tettegouche. The park borders Lax Lake, providing easy access to the ice. The park loans out ice fishing equipment and provides bait, allowing participants to come and enjoy the activity without worrying about acquiring needed equipment.

Interpretive Naturalist Kurt Mead says that a major highlight of the program is when “a kid or someone new to this sport catches a fish. Big or small, it doesn’t matter. Pulling your first fish out through the ice can be a really fun experience. Are the fish always biting?” Mead asks, answering himself with an “of course not. But sharing a beautiful winter day on the ice with good people has its own rewards.”

Kurt Mead went on to say, “Our hope is to help folks and families to experience a new ‘winter thing’. We live in a cold, snowy, icy climate, and if you don’t find ways to enjoy winter, you will be unhappy for about half of the year. Maybe ice fishing is your new ‘winter thing’ and you just don’t know it!”

Hello! My name is Haley Searls. I’ve loved writing from an early age, though my nonfiction writing at five years old consisted mainly of weather and gardening reports. I still have some of those early articles: “It’s sunny.” “It’s still sunny.” “It’s raining.” I’m glad to say my writing has improved since then. I wrote a guest post for the Silver Bay Public Library blog, and was the writer/editor of the newsletter for my American Heritage Girls troop. I have been writing for the North Shore Journal since June 2022. Besides writing, I love reading, drawing, photography, music, and spending time with family and friends. Two books that have really influenced my writing are Reforming Journalism by Marvin Olasky and Writer to Writer by Bodie and Brock Thoene. As a journalist, I want to share positive community interactions and inspire people to make lasting connections. Article topics that interest me are ones which show community activities and involvement. Such articles include community events, youth accomplishments, library programming, small businesses, local history, local artists and authors, art programs, and cultural events such as theater and dance. If you have an article idea, email the North Shore Journal with my name in the subject line! I look forward to hearing from you!
