Temps Go Down, North Shore Teams Look to Heat Up

Though the North Shore Storm girls hockey team had a break from competition over the Thanksgiving holiday, the boys team has been hard at work, stiving to ignite their season. Following a challenging opener in Hayward on November 22nd, the Storm continues to search for their first victory after falling short in their subsequent matchups.

On November 26th, the Storm played Superior in a home game and lost 6-1, echoing last season’s defeat to the Spartans. Superior dominated early, scoring three goals in the first period, two in the second, and one in the third.

North Shore’s lone goal came from Senior Forward #11 Ethan Meeks, who capitalized on a power play following a tripping call against the Spartans. Seniors #15 Ayden Althaus and #8 Cole Anderson provided the assists.

The November 30th matchup against South St. Paul at Sonju Arena in Two Harbors proved to be a tighter contest. Senior #19 Cooper Anderson opened the scoring for the Storm, with assists from Senior #8 Cole Anderson and Sophomore #9 Nox Peterson.

South St. Paul responded with two goals in the second period, including a shorthanded effort, before the Storm battled back to tie. Senior #14 Albin Linder found the back of the net with Senior #11 Ethan Meeks providing the assist. Meeks struck again as the playmaker, setting up Freshman #13 Kade Norman’s power-play goal after a slashing penalty.

Unfortunately, South St. Paul managed to score another shorthanded goal before the game ended in a 4-3 loss for the Storm.

This season, the Storm boasts a senior-heavy roster, with 12 players listed—double the number from last year, according to mshsl.org. This growth highlights not only the region’s enthusiasm for hockey but also the dedication and commitment these athletes bring to the ice.

Next, the Storm faced Ely at Sonju Arena on December 3, with highlights to follow in next week’s publication. Ely proved a tough opponent last season, defeating the Storm 4-1 and later delivering a 7-0 shutout.

Looking ahead, the Storm will take on Greenway on December 5. The teams had a competitive series last season, tying one matchup before the Storm secured a 4-1 victory in their second meeting.

The North Shore Storm girls’ team took on Cloquet/Esko/ Carlton on the 3rd and we look forward to reporting on that in our next issue.

Jumping from the ice to the basketball court, both the boys’ and girls’ Cook County teams began their seasons with an opener against South Ridge on December 3. Meanwhile, the Two Harbors boys basketball team delivered an impressive performance in their season debut, defeating Chisholm 75-46. They’ll look to keep the momentum going as they face Dulmer on December 5.

Area girls’ basketball teams faced tough challenges in their season openers. Silver Bay was defeated 54-9 by Littlefork-Big Falls, while Two Harbors fell to Marshall 94-34. However, the two teams squared off in Silver Bay on November 25, where Two Harbors bounced back with a dominant 60-19 victory.

Two Harbors has since dropped both of their following games, both held at home. Ely defeated them 56- 30, and Chisholm controlled the game, finishing with a 65-46 score. The Agates will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Moose Lake-Willow River on December 6th at Moose Lake High School. Check back next week for highlights on that game.
