Lake Superior School Board Welcomes New Members

The Lake Superior School Board welcomed two new members at their January meeting last week. Cyndi Ryder and Norbert Norman will be representing District 4 and District 6 respectively and will replace Harriet Hagedorn and Mark Broin.

Kristen Lee, Technology Director for the district will be retiring at the end of this school year. The Board accepted her retirement and acknowledged her years of dedicated service. Ms Lee has been serving the district for about 30 years and helped shepherd district staff and students into the Internet age. She will be missed.

The Board approved the William Kelly School trip to France, which is scheduled for March of 2026. Details that students and parents will be interested in will be forthcoming.

Agenda items that are typical at public meetings, this time of year, were discussed and voted on. These include mileage and meal reimbursement rates for staff who attend out of district meetings. Additionally, the Board approved a resolution that will allow the acceptance of grants and donations to the district. Superintendent Gina Kleive expressed appreciation for the generous support of area businesses who have collectively donated $71,000 to help with various District programs.

Minnehaha Principal Brett Archer, reported that students are working to design an unofficial school logo. The logo, when completed, will capture student’s ideas about what Minnehaha school means to them. This project sparks both collaborative and creative thinking among students who are involved.

William Kelley Principal Dan Johnson shared that five students have expressed interest in receiving EMT training through the partnership between the LSSD and the Lake County EMS. Johnson also stated that there has been a temporary setback regarding the work that is being done to get the swimming pool up and running. The setback is due to old equipment and will hopefully be remedied soon.

Two Harbors High School Assistant Principal, Rachel Jackson, reported on work that is taking place to align courses that are offered in district schools. This work ensures that learning objectives, instructional materials, activities, and assessments, across all district schools, work together cohesively to support students in achieving the intended learning outcomes.

Superintendent Gina Kleive was in Saint Paul last week with members from the Chamber of Commerce to discuss legislative priorities with our elected officials. She will also have attended the Minnesota School Board Leadership Conference, held in Minneapolis, January 16th and 17th.

The next LSSD Board meeting will be held on February 11th at 6:00 PM.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
