Community event will highlight challenges of building the light station
TWO HARBORS, Minn. (July 17, 2023) – Split Rock Lighthouse invites the North Shore community and history lovers everywhere to celebrate the landmark’s 113th birthday at the Keeper’s View Anniversary event on July 28 from 6 pm–10 pm.
The event will feature food, fascinating stories, and a rare opportunity to see a lighthouse beacon lighting. Costumed interpreters will share first-hand accounts of the difficulties of building the lighthouse from the perspective of the man who designed it, Ralph Russel Tinkham.
Guests can register now for one of seven guided tours, beginning at 6:30 pm. Tours will begin every 15 minutes and last 30 minutes each. Visitors can also watch the educational film, “Tribute to the Age of Steel”, an award-winning documentary produced by the Minnesota Historical Society in 1986.
The site grounds will also be open to explore, along with the new exhibit, which features dozens of previously unseen artifacts and untold stories. Among these are original construction estimate documents and more first-hand accounts from those who built the lighthouse.
The lighthouse beacon will be lit at 9 pm and guests will have exclusive access to the lighthouse after it is turned on. Guests are encouraged to dress for the weather, bring a headlamp, bug spray, and folding chairs.
