One of our publication’s top headlines last week celebrated the Storm 12U girls hockey team’s first-place finish at the Great Lake Skate Tournament at Sonju Arena. This week, the spotlight shifted to younger, smaller skaters – small in stature but mighty in enthusiasm – who took the ice in Two Harbors for the Great Lake Skate Mite 1 Jamboree.
Held January 25–26, the jamboree brought together 113 kids from five communities: Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Hermantown, Cloquet, and Ely. Each team participated in three half-ice games over the weekend, filling the rink with energy and excitement.
“The kids skated hard and had a great time!” wrote in Cynthia Poyhonen, Mite 1 team lead for the Two Harbors Youth Hockey Association. “We had great support from our sponsors in the community. We had a successful jamboree because of them!
The area Mites have had an exciting season, with the chance to skate at the Amsoil Arena during a UMD Bulldog hockey game. Poyhonen reported that during the experience, every 1 mite skater from Two Harbors made it to the game.
