Area Mite 1 Teams Take the Ice at Great Lake Skate Jamboree

One of our publica­tion’s top headlines last week celebrat­ed the Storm 12U girls hockey team’s first-place finish at the Great Lake Skate Tournament at Son­ju Arena. This week, the spotlight shifted to younger, smaller skat­ers – small in stature but mighty in enthusi­asm – who took the ice in Two Harbors for the Great Lake Skate Mite 1 Jamboree.

Held January 25–26, the jamboree brought together 113 kids from five communities: Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Hermantown, Cloquet, and Ely. Each team participated in three half-ice games over the weekend, filling the rink with energy and excitement.

“The kids skated hard and had a great time!” wrote in Cyn­thia Poyhonen, Mite 1 team lead for the Two Harbors Youth Hock­ey Association. “We had great support from our sponsors in the community. We had a successful jamboree because of them!

The area Mites have had an exciting sea­son, with the chance to skate at the Amsoil Arena during a UMD Bulldog hockey game. Poyhonen reported that during the expe­rience, every 1 mite skater from Two Har­bors made it to the game.

The Mites have en­joyed an exciting sea­son, including a special opportunity to skate at Amsoil Arena during a UMD Bulldog hockey game. According to Poyhonen, every Mite 1 skater from Two Harbors made it to that memorable event.
