A SALUTE TO THE U.S. ARMY: DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

The United States Army, the oldest and largest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, was established on June 14, 1775, by the Continental Congress. Its mission was to defend the fledgling nation against British forces during the American Revolution. This date is now celebrated annually as the Army’s birthday, honoring its legacy of service and sacrifice.

Known for their dedication and versatility, Soldiers in the U.S. Army operate under the motto “This We’ll Defend.” This phrase, prominently displayed on the Army’s flag, reflects the institution’s commitment to protect the United States and its interests both at home and abroad. The Army is divided into active duty, reserve, and National Guard components, with a combined force of over one million Soldiers as of 2024.

The Army’s history is rich with significant contributions to America’s security. From the Revolutionary War to the global conflicts of the 20th century and today’s missions combating terrorism and providing humanitarian assistance, the Army has been a cornerstone of national defense. Notable battles such as Gettysburg, Normandy, and Operation Desert Storm highlight the courage and resilience of American Soldiers.

Originating during World War II, nicknames like “Grunts” and “Dogfaces” have been affectionately given to Army Soldiers over the years. Soldiers are also famously referred to as “G.I.s,” a term that evolved from “Government Issue” and became synonymous with their identity during World War II.

The Army’s structure includes a wide array of specialized units. This diversity allows the Army to excel in conventional warfare, peacekeeping missions, and cutting-edge operations in cyberspace.

The Army’s Special Forces, the Green Berets, represent some of the most elite Soldiers in the world. They are trained for unconventional warfare, counterinsurgency, and special reconnaissance missions. During the Vietnam War, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MAC-V SOG) epitomized the courage and ingenuity of these forces. MAC-V SOG conducted covert operations deep in enemy territory, gathering intelligence, rescuing prisoners, and disrupting enemy supply lines. These missions were so secretive that details remained classified for decades, underscoring the group’s critical role in the war effort.

Additional facts include the Army’s iconic Old Guard, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, which serves as the official ceremonial unit and guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Another notable tradition is the Army’s use of its official song, “The Army Goes Rolling Along,” to inspire pride and unity among its ranks.

With more than 249 years of dedicated service, the U.S. Army continues to stand as a testament to strength, innovation, and commitment. To all who wear the uniform: thank you for your service, Go Army!
