Girls Varsity Basketball

Silver Bay opened the new year on a tough note against Cromwell Wright on January 6, where the Cardinals controlled the game and won 69-19. The Mariners bounced back with a stronger showing on January 8 against Hill City/Northland, but the Hill City Storm held on for a 68-61 victory.

Duluth Denfeld traveled to Silver Bay on January 9 and the Hunters added another loss to the Mariners’ week.

Silver Bay then faced McGregor on January 13 and played on the road at South Ridge on January 15.

Two Harbors had similar struggles against Duluth Denfeld when they met the Hunters on January 5, falling 61-45. Back at home, the Agates took on International Falls and the Broncos came out ahead 54-46.

Travelling to play Greenway/Nashwauk Keewatin, the Agates were unable to find their next W despite keeping the game about as close as possible. Greenway got the win 61-59. Two Harbors next faced Moose Lake/Willow River on January 15, with results to be reported in a future issue of NSJ.

Boys Varsity Basketball

Two Harbors hosted Cloquet on January 5 in a tight matchup that ended with a 64-60 win for the Agates.

The team then traveled to South Ridge on January 8, where the Panthers took control and handed the Agates an 80-43 loss. Two Harbors regrouped quickly and earned a 73-61 home win over Crosby Ironton on January 10.

“Crosby Ironton brought energy and passion, but from the opening tip till the end, the Agates matched and exceeded that over and over again,” posted Head Coach Bill Anderson.

The Agates went on the road to face Proctor on January 13. If you are catching this in time, they return home on January 16 for a matchup against Moose Lake/Willow River. Varsity tips off at 7:15.

Cook County also saw success since our last report, defeating McGregor 58-52 on their home court.

The Vikings continued a busy stretch with games against South Ridge on January 13 and North Woods on January 15. They travel to Floodwood for a January 16 contest before returning home to host International Falls on January 17.

Boys Varsity Hockey

The North Shore Storm boys hockey team hosted Mora/Milaca at Sonju Arena on January 9. Senior Anders Hastings opened the scoring midway through the first period on an unassisted goal. The Timberwolves tied it in the middle of the second.

North Shore took control again in the third when Josh Johnson scored with senior Joshua Maxwell assisting. Johnson then set up senior Isaiah Bertin for a power play goal that put the Storm ahead 3-1.

Mora/Milaca added one more in the third, but the Storm held on for a 3-2 win. Sophomore goalie Dax Krech faced 25 shots in the victory.

North Shore traveled to Ely for a January 15 matchup and will return home to Rukavina Arena to take on Moose Lake Area.

Girls Varsity Hockey

North Shore and the Hayward Co-Op were evenly matched in their January meeting, with the Storm firing 51 shots but unable to break through in regulation. Overtime proved decisive when a power play set up junior Berkley Hoff for the game winner at 7:06. Sophomore Guilia McGiffert and junior Reese Costley recorded the assists.

Sophomore goalie Emmy Bentler was perfect in net, stopping all 21 shots she faced.

On January13, the team went to the Iron Trail Motors Event Center to take on Rock Ridge. They will also be away on January 16, playing Breck then South St Paul the following day. 

The Storm will be back home on January 20 to play Hibbing/ Chisholm at Sonju Arena before they take on Rock Ridge, also at Sonju, on January 22.
