Defenders rarely receive the same attention as goal scorers. Their best work often goes unnoticed, cutting off an attack before it develops or stepping into the right position before a dangerous chance ever materializes.
This fall, however, Two Harbors junior Keelie Ronning’s work on the back line earned recognition across Minnesota.
Ronning was named to the Minnesota Class A All-State Second Team, placing her among the top 48 players in the state. According to Head Coach Zach Vieau, 24 players are selected to the First Team and 24 to the Second Team each season, making the honor one of the highest individual achievements in high school soccer.
For Vieau, the selection simply confirmed what he has seen throughout Ronning’s career.
“She absolutely deserves it because she not only is extremely talented physically on the field but is the smartest soccer player with soccer IQ I have had the pleasure to coach,” Vieau said.
Ronning has been a fixture on the varsity roster for four seasons, bringing experience and consistency to a program that spent much of the fall adapting to injuries and lineup changes.
The Agates lost multiple players during the season, forcing younger athletes into larger varsity roles and reshuffling positions throughout the roster. Despite those challenges, Two Harbors finished the regular season with a winning record and secured the No. 4 seed in the Section 7A tournament.
While much of the attention naturally falls on goals and offensive production, Vieau believes Ronning’s understanding of the game is what separates her from other players.
Earlier this season, he offered perhaps the highest praise a coach can give.
“She would be the best defender on any team in the state,” he said. “Single A, AAA, AA.”
That confidence comes from years of watching Ronning read opposing attacks, organize teammates, and make the kind of plays that don’t always appear on a stat sheet but often determine the outcome of a match.
Her all-state selection was one of several postseason honors earned by Agate players this year. Ronning, along with Ashlynn Cavallin, Hallie Komarek and Hayden Bright, was selected to play in the Essentia Health High School Girls All-Star Soccer Game on Nov. 9 at Esko Community Field.
The recognition also reflects the continued growth of the Two Harbors program. Participation numbers have steadily increased in recent years, and this season the Agates fielded a roster of 34 players while leaning on a combination of veteran leadership and emerging young talent.
For a team that battled adversity throughout the season, having one of the state’s top defenders anchoring the back line provided stability when it was most needed.
And unlike many all-state honorees, Ronning’s high school career is not finished. With another season still ahead of her, the Agates will return next fall with one of Minnesota’s top defenders once again leading the way from the back.
