Willard Clark, 92, Two Harbors, died Monday, December 23, 2024, at Waterview Shores.
Willard was born December 30, 1931 to Jasper and Freda (Dahlen) Clark in Weirgor, Wisconsin. He graduated from Bruce High School in 1949 before being drafted into the Army. His wedding to Gloria Thorson had to be moved up two weeks in order for him to make it to basic training on time. They were married January 27, 1952. Willard served 2 years in the Army during the Korean War and upon his discharge returned to Wisconsin. Willard attended trade school for telegraphy and was employed by the Soo Lines as a depot agent and telegrapher. In October of 1955 Willard and Gloria moved to Iron Junction, Minnesota while Willard was employed at the DM&IR Railroad. The family later moved to Two Harbors in 1964. Willard retired from the railroad in the fall of 1992 but stayed busy owning and operating a car wash and driving cars for Sonju’s.
Not one to sit around idle, Willard was very involved in local politics. He served on the Iron Junction Village Council from 1961-1964, the Two Harbors City Council from 1972-1993, and was a Lake County Commissioner from 1994-2006.
He enjoyed railroad steam engine, especially the Mallets, depending on the year or game, the Vikings, Willie Nelson music, gardening, especially his roses, and barbecues and brats with family. Willard was extremely proud of his sons and grandchildren and told them often. More than anything, he loved Gloria “Tootsie”. He used to say, “God made her just for me”.
Willard was preceded in death by his parents; 9 siblings; and his son, John earlier this year.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria; sons, Ricky (Brenda) and Bruce; grandchildren, Jesse, Shawn (Dawn), Faith, Hailey, Isaiah (Patty), LeeAnn and Hope; great-grandchildren, Landon, Evelyn, and Matthew; brother, Warren Clark; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Clark family would like to give a very special thanks to Sara, RN with Moments Hospice and her whole team, Waterview Shores, Barross House and Lake View Memorial Hospital nursing and medical staff for all their unconditional love and care of Willard and his family.
