Verna Mae Sinderman, 74, of Finland, died Friday, June 23, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital, after a long illness, with her husband at her side.
Verna was born October 13, 1948 to Erwin and Mary (Kalender) Nikolai in TwoHarbors and grew up in Finland.
After graduating from William Kelley High School in Silver Bay in 1966, she moved to Minneapolis, where she was employed at Traveler’s Insurance. While in Minneapolis, she met James Sinderman, and they married in 1975, and returned to Finland. Verna was employed at Norwest Bank in Silver Bay for a short time and later worked at North Shore Federal Credit Union as a loan officer, retiring in 2015.
Verna was a member of Zion Lutheran, now Baptism River Community Church and its Booya Committee, the Finland MN Historical Society, the St. Urho’s Day Committee, and the Heart of the Arrowhead Association. In her younger years she was a member of the Finland Firettes, and through the years was a dedicated Finland Fire wife. As a child she was active in 4-H, and continued in leadership as an adult, and was the “Best Horse Pooper Scooper”.
She enjoyed camping and traveling with her family, cooking fresh fish, grouse and brats, time with her grandchildren, Hallmark movies, and her feet in the sand at the water’s edge.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Nikolai; and a sister, Anne Striker.
She is survived by her husband, James Sinderman; sons, Christopher (Nicole) Sinderman and Michael (Karen) Sinderman; grandchildren, Graylan and Kenzley; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
