RONALD ALFRED GERVAIS, SR. “BLACKIE” (March 27, 1937 – March 6, 2025)

Ronald A. Gervais Sr., 87, passed away reuniting with his beloved wife Carol on Thursday, March 6, 2025 while in the North Shore Health Hospital in Grand Marais, MN.

He was born March 28, 1937 to Ray and Florence (Kincaid) Gervais in St. Paul, MN. The family lived in Tofte, MN, where Ron grew up and graduated from Cook County High School, Class of 1955. Ron married the love of his life, Carol Johnson, on December 2, 1956 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais, MN. Lifetime res-idents of Tofte, MN, Ron and Carol raised their 3 sons together as Ron worked for the Eire / LTV Mining Co. at Taconite Harbor, MN for nearly 40 years.

Ron had a track record of competitiveness, including HS Football, Golf, Billiards, Card Games, Cribbage, Pitching Softball leagues, and his greatest passion, Curling. Just some of Ron’s side jobs included cutting firewood and picking everything from worms to agates to lost golf balls; all to subsidize his curling travel expenses. As perhaps one of the best Skips to ever com-pete on the ice, Ron is documented with the most games ever played and credited with winning several national championships.

An outdoorsman to the core, Ron loved to hunt and fish any chance he could, and was an exceptional marksman.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Carol Gervais, and his parents Ray Gervais and Florence Tormondson.

Ronald is survived by his three sons, Ronald Jr. (Joan) of Grand Marais, Terry of Tofte, and Michael of Fairbanks Alaska; brother Gerald J Gervais of Tofte; grand-children, Todd (Jessica) Gervais, Rachel (Gunnar) Nagy and Gina (Chad) Mass; eight great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be planned and announced in the future.

Ron will be greatly missed.

Typically these “about me” pages include a list of academic achievements (I have none) and positions held (I have had many, but who really cares about those?) So, in the words of the late Admiral James Stockwell, “Who am I? Why am I here?” I’m well into my seventh decade on this blue planet we call home. I’m a pretty successful husband, father, and grandfather, at least in my humble opinion. My progeny may disagree. We have four children and five grandchildren. I spent most of my professional life in the freight business. At the tender age of 40, early retirement beckoned and we moved to Grand Marais. A year after we got here, we bought and operated the Cook County News Herald, a weekly newspaper in Grand Marais. A sharp learning curve for a dumb freight broker to become a newspaper editor and publisher. By 1999 the News Herald was an acquisition target for a rapidly consolidating media market. We sold our businesses and “retired” again, buying a winter retreat in Nevada. In the fall of 2016, we returned to Grand Marais and bought a house from old friends of ours on the ridge overlooking Lake Superior. They were able to move closer to family and their Mexico winter home. And we came home to what we say is our last house. I’m a strong believer in the value of local newspapers--both online and those you can wrap a fish in. I write a weekly column and a couple of feature stories for the Northshore Journal. I’m most interested in writing about the everyday lives of local people and reporting on issues of importance to them.
