Kenneth Dale Mandelin Sr., 82, passed away peacefully on October 21 after a long, courageous battle with COPD. Born in Duluth to Ella and Elmer Mandelin, Kenny’s roots ran deep in this red clay. He lived his entire life in the beautiful Sucker River Valley, making him a living archive of the area and its people. More than a local historian, Kenny was a cornerstone of the community, a mentor to many, and a friend to all. His willingness to help knew no bounds. In his youth, he visited with the older folks and, later, ensured everyone had a clear driveway in the winter. With his sharp wit and legendary “Kennyisms,” he could offer wisdom and make you laugh in the same sentence.
He was best known for his love and encyclopedic knowledge of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Farmall tractors (the only tractor worth owning in his eyes). His love of motorcycles went beyond riding; he was also a passionate long-time member of the Thunderbird MC. He commanded respect, not only in height but in his no-BS way of talking, and his club brothers were proud to have him serve as treasurer and then president for 10 years.
He is survived by his loving partner, Patty Heino; children Laurie Edblom, Nancy (Romney) Sande, Ruth Ann (Scott Vesterstein) Mandelin, Kenneth Jr. Mandelin, Kevin Halligan, Matthew (Anna) Jensen, Kimberly (Josh) Miens, and Kristen (Jeff Gill) Carter; brothers, Gary (Lisa) Mandelin, and Karl (Skipper Sironen) Mandelin; 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; many wonderful friends, especially Joe Wehmanen who loved him as a father; his Thunderbird MC family; and his fur-ever loyal cat, Tom.
Life moves fast, as Kenny would say, faster than a fart in a five-finger mitt. Let’s heed his wisdom and cherish each day with our loved ones. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, November 3, from 1-4 pm at the Duluth Township Town Hall, 6092 Homestead Road, Duluth, MN, 55804.
