Two Harbors Council; Body Worn Cameras & Volunteer Tree Planters

Two Harbors Police Chief Rick Hogenson spoke with the City Council about the department’s move toward having its officers wear body-worn cameras. This move mirrors decisions made recently by the Silver Bay Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Use of body-worn cameras helps to enhance safety for both the public and for police officers by documenting events and capturing evidence. Cameras help preserve both audio and visual information for use in court cases and can help law enforcement agencies evaluate police interactions with the public. Hogenson’s presentation was primarily informational for the Council and does have the support of Council members. Residents will soon be invited to ask questions and post comments concerning the move toward the use of body-worn cameras and they should watch for the opportunity to do so on the City’s web site.

Mayor Lew Conner recognized Paul Iverson and Todd Ronning for their work planting trees in Two Harbors and around the Two Harbors Lighthouse. Iverson, Ronning and others have engaged in this radical tree planting venture, without recognition, for 9 years. They have focused on white pine, mountain ash and ninebark trees and have planted between 50 to 75 trees per year. Mayor Conner presented both Iverson and Ronning with plaques recognizing them for their service to the community.

The Council accepted a recommendation from Bolton and Menk to accept a bid from Northland Construction, in the amount of $221,200.00, for the Airport Taxi Line C reconstruction project. 90% of the funding for this project comes from the Federal Government while 5% of the cost will be covered by the State, and the remaining 5% covered by the City.

In other business, the Council approved a special events permit for the Moonlight Music and Market Street Festival on the 600 block of 1st Avenues for the following Fridays; June 21st, July 19th, August 16th and September 20th. The Council also accepted, with regrets, the resignation of Cheryl Passe from the Library Board and the resignation of Derrick Passe as Ward 4 Council Representative. The Council is calling for residents of Ward 4 who are interested in filling an interim position on the Council to file their applications with City Hall.

The next Two Harbors City Council will be held on June 24th. The meeting will start at 5:30.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
