Community Heroes Step Up for Kids

By Krista Starkovich

The owners of Anderson’s Greenhouse, Scott and Savannah, are making a big difference in the lives of local children. They’ve been incredibly generous ever since they took over the business a couple of years ago, from offering free pumpkins near Halloween to helping out whenever they see a need. Now, their latest act of kindness is a true lifeline: preparing bagged lunches for all children affected by the temporary pause in SNAP benefits.

Scott and Savannah are personally purchasing all the food, and they want everyone to know that no one will be turned away.

Helping hungry children is their mission. The bagged lunches are ready for pick up daily from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. You can simply grab a lunch at the back door with absolutely no questions asked, ensuring families in need can easily get food for their children and even themselves. They have also been delivering bag lunches to the Rustic Creek neighborhood, which Scott personally has had ties to in the past. He knows how important it is to make sure no one is forgotten.

Scott shared their motivation, saying they “understand when times are tough and no kids should ever go hungry.” He views this as their small contribution to the community, hoping it’s just the beginning of people caring more about one another. Having personally struggled with hunger as a child, both Scott and Savannah were immediately moved to action when they realized what was happening with the shutdown. The idea to help just blossomed like their beautiful flowers.

As the federal government shutdown continues, communities are stepping up to support their neighbors who rely on assistance like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). With about one in eight Americans using food assistance including many who work but don’t earn enough—the need is significant.

Scott mentioned that they’ve already seen a great number of people stepping up to help and make donations. They gladly accept both cash and food donations to reach even more children and families. Once SNAP benefits resume, any remaining food items and all leftover donated funds will be given to the local food shelf.

Once again, these vital lunches are available seven days a week, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at Anderson’s Greenhouse, 1403 7th Ave., Two Harbors. They will continue until families receive their SNAP benefits again.

If you would like to help Scott and Savannah continue this mission, both monetary and food donations are being accepted at:
