A Bite Out of Bay Days in Silver Bay- By Sarah K. Simon

Bay Days was just beginning and already kickin’ when I visited Silver Bay on Friday afternoon. I was a bit early for the event I had come to write about, so I took the opportunity to wander around by the city hall venue. Various vendors had set up earlier and were selling crafts, goodies, and treasures. Some were even providing free trials of their services, such as the massage therapists who were getting event goers feeling loose and at ease going into the three-day celebration.

After walking through the aisles looking at all the wares, I followed my nose to the food trucks. Suddenly I was so very hungry, and I had a tough choice ahead of me. I did a circle looking at each food truck and every single one made me think “that looks good!” Nacho Bizness was serving nachos, tacos, burritos, and more. I saw someone walking away from Sugarlicious with a slice of cheesecake that looked like a work of art. Baptism River Barbecue Company’s reputation precedes them and I knew that would be a great choice, too. Each of these and more were calling my name.

I am a sucker, however, for good fried rice and I decided to give Becky’s Oriental Foods a try. Becky’s has been setting up at Silver Bay Bay Days for about eight to ten years. Tony Elliot, of Duluth, was working the till and took my order. I asked him if business was good during Bay Days, and he smiled and said it sure was. As I found a spot to sit, I saw that I was not the only one that had chosen fried rice for lunch. Tony was right.

The eggroll, my friends, was crispy and perfect. The fried rice had just the right amount of garlic (apologies, however, to those I interviewed afterwards). It was a lot of food. My husband got to have the rest (minus the wontons which were just too good to share) for dinner when I got home and agreed it was super tasty. Great job Becky’s Oriental Foods!

I hope everyone was able to have a bite or two out of all the foods offered at Bay Days. I sure wish I could have sampled more of the treats!
