North Shore Fall Horrorscope

Fall is just around the corner on the North Shore. The air is cooling, the mornings are foggy, and the first yellow leaves are already showing up along the ditches. It is the season that promises crisp hikes, cozy sweaters, and scenic overlooks. It also brings a few familiar horrors that locals know all too well. Whether you live in Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Grand Marais, or somewhere in between, the stars have a few warnings for you this season.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

You wake up convinced you can “beat the leaf peepers” to Oberg. You fly up Highway 61, pass a line of RVs, and feel victorious. When you reach the trailhead, the lot is already full, and one Subaru is parked sideways across two spaces. A group from Wisconsin is photographing a single yellow leaf like it’s a rare artifact.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

You buy a new fall blanket that is fuzzy, soft, and has a great pumpkin pattern. You drape it over the couch for one peaceful moment. Your pet hops up, circles twice, and claims the exact center. You consider reclaiming it, but you know you won’t.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

You start a conversation about leaf colors with a stranger outside Java Moose. Ten minutes later, you are discussing trail conditions, weather patterns, and someone’s cousin’s wedding in Lutsen. You leave unsure how the conversation started or ended.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

You walk down to the lake for a peaceful moment. A tourist approaches and asks if you can take their family photo. You agree. They ask for one more. Then one more. Then one “just in case.” Your quiet moment dissolves like fog.

Leo (July 23–Aug. 22)

You plan a majestic fall photo at Palisade Head, imagining golden light and sweeping views. The moment you arrive, the sky turns flat gray, the wind picks up, and your hair does something you cannot control.

Virgo (Aug. 23–Sept. 22)

You line up a shoreline photo near Stoney Point, adjusting your stance until the horizon is perfectly straight. You check the image later and discover it is crooked. You consider deleting your entire camera roll.

Libra (Sept. 23–Oct. 22)

You try to take a balanced photo of your coffee and the leaves outside the Tofte Circle K. A gust of wind moves the leaves. You adjust. Another gust moves the coffee sleeve. You adjust again. The coffee cools.

Scorpio (Oct. 23–Nov. 21)

You overhear someone misrepresenting a story you told last week at the Rustic Inn. You cannot correct them without revealing you were listening. You stew quietly.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21)

You wander into a fall craft fair “just to look.” You leave with a sixty-five dollar pumpkin decoration shaped like a moose. You have no regrets.

Capricorn (Dec. 22–Jan. 19)

You attempt to winterize early, checking every detail. Something still surprises you in November. You blame the forecast.

Aquarius (Jan. 20–Feb. 18)

You share an obscure fact about thermoclines with a friend. They correct you incorrectly. You consider giving a lecture.

Pisces (Feb. 19–March 20)

You find a perfect leaf on the trail near Pincushion. You carry it with reverence. You drop it through the boardwalk slats and mourn briefly.

As fall settles in along the North Shore, the season will bring its usual mix of beauty, mischief, and small surprises. The lake will keep its opinions, the wind will keep its timing, and the leaves will change whether we are ready or not. Whatever your sign, may your coffee stay warm, your photos stay straight, and your encounters with leaf peepers be brief.
