Grand Marais, Minn. — The University of Minnesota Extension is teaming up with the Lake Superior Chapter of the Sustainable Farming Association and the Northwoods Food Project to host a farm field tour at Creaking Tree Farm in Lutsen. This event, tailored for farmers, local food producers, and aspiring commercial growers, offers a unique opportunity to learn about sustainable farming practices.
The tour takes place on Friday, September 5th, from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants will meet at the farm; directions will be provided upon registration. Carpooling is strongly encouraged due to limited on-site parking.
Creaking Tree Farm, a family-run homestead nestled in Lutsen’s Maple Belt, has expanded over 11 seasons from a small garden to more than half an acre of cultivated space. Farmers Rachel and Ian Andrus employ no-till, no-spray methods and organic principles to build healthy soil. Their products are sold at local farmers’ markets, through a CSA, and to area restaurants and co-ops.
“Meeting and learning from fellow farmers and local food producers is a great way for both beginning and established producers to gain insights into growing food in our region,” says Sarah Waddle, Local Extension Educator.
