Battle of the Badges: A Community Showdown

By Krista Starkovich

The 3rd annual Battle of the Badges Volley ball Tournament energized the William Kelley School gymnasium on Tuesday, November 3rd. Born from an idea by the M-Club—a twist on an Adult All Star game—this event quickly found its true focus: honoring our local first responders. These tirelessly working men and women are the backbone of our community’s safety, and the M-Club wanted to recognize them as the true community “All-Stars.”

The tournament began three years ago, pitting Local Law Enforcement against the Fire Department, and the response from players and the community has been phenomenal ever since. It’s a fun and exciting way to raise funds while thanking those who serve.

This year, our community’s he roes turned out for an evening of friendly rivalry, determination, laughter, and fun, all competing for the highly coveted traveling trophy. The Silver Bay Fire Department had proudly held the trophy since winning last year, and everyone was wondering: could they defend their title, or would local law enforcement snatch the victory?

Fans, both young and old, filled the bleachers, and the band kept the energy high with victorious songs. The tournament wasn’t just a single matchup; it featured several spirited games:

• Local Law Enforcement vs. Faculty

• Silver Bay Fire Department vs. NSFCU (North Shore Federal Credit Union)

• NSFCU vs. Faculty

• The Final Game: Silver Bay Fire Department vs. Local Law Enforcement

All the matches were entertaining, but the final showdown lived up to the hype. The game between the law enforcement and the fire department was neck-and-neck, tying twice. It even included a humorous moment when the ball got stuck in the ceiling fixtures, providing a brief, comical pause. The drama built up to a 24–24 score. No one could predict the champion. But then, the Law Enforcement team gained momentum and narrowly pulled off the win, earning the right to take possession of the coveted traveling trophy!

The individuals who played rep resent an amazing level of dedication, grit, and service to their community. The roster shows players with service records ranging from 2 years all the way up to an incredible 31 years! The Fire Department and Lake County officers perform jobs few are able or willing to do, and participating in this tournament is yet another way they give back.

Teachers and local credit union workers also stepped up to play. Teachers are also vital, nurturing our future community within the school, which truly serves as the heartbeat of Silver Bay.

This tournament is more than just a fun event; it’s a small but important fundraiser for the M-Club, a non-profit booster club that supports all Silver Bay athletic programs, including the Mariner and North Shore Storm teams. The M-Club provides essential support, from jerseys and equipment to facility maintenance.

We are fortunate to live in a place where community members, businesses, and individuals care so deeply about one another and our youth. The people who played in the Battle of the Badges truly embody the spirit of service and are, without a doubt, the All-Stars of our community
