Two Harbors City Council Meeting; February 26, 2024

The Two Harbors City Council began their Monday night meeting commemorating the life of Brad Jones, who passed away on Saturday, February 24th, at the age of 57. Jones spent 27 years working for the city of Two Harbors as a member of the Water and Gas Department. In addition, he served as a member of the Two Harbors City Council from 2003 to 2005 and on the Lake County Board from 2007 to 2015, where he worked on multiple boards and commissions throughout the county and region. Council Chair Robin Glaser acknowledged Brad’s many years of dedication and service to the community and the loss that people who knew and worked with him are feeling. Brad’s wife, Janelle, their children, Macey and Brjen, and other family members were present on Monday in the Council chambers. Brad will be missed.

Joe Rhein, of Bolton & Menk, informed the Council that there has been a lot of interest from contractors for the 2024 – 2025 street project. In light of this, Rhein asked the Council to extend the time allowed for contractors to submit their bids by two weeks. This will give prospective contractors time to more thoroughly study the project and prepare their bids, which in turn, will make the process competitive and more cost effective for the city. The Council approved Rhein’s recommendation.

Readers may be aware of the street work that had to be redone last year on 4th Avenue by Minnehaha School. A problem existed with the sewer and water main connection to the school and additional work was needed to correct it. Expense for this was shared by the contractor, the school district, Bolton & Menk and the City and resulted in a reduction of $ 11 , 0 5 2 . 0 1 from the construction contract.

St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth and Lake View Hospital here in Two Harbors have signed an affiliation agreement with Aspirus Health Care, out of Wausau Wisconsin. This affiliation is designed to expand rural access to health care and advance quality of care for residents of northeastern Minnesota. The Council approved the modification of bond documents recognizing this affiliation.

The Two Harbors Primary Presidential Nomination Election will be held on March 5th and the next Two Harbors Council meeting will be held on March 11th at 6:00.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
