The End Of The School Year Is Just Around The Corner.
As the 2022 – 23 school year begins to wind down, the Lake Superior School Board plans for the coming Fall semester.
William Kelley Schools Principal Joe Nicklay is retiring at the end of the current term and will be replaced by Curriculum Director Dan Johnson. All administrative staff in the district have specific duties related to their positions that go beyond their job titles. Administrative staff will work collectively to “fill in gaps” and make sure that all administrative duties are covered. In addition to taking on the responsibilities of being the William Kelley Principal, Johnson will retain his duties as Curriculum Director.
The Board approved a resolution for the laying off of all Educational Assistants. This is an annual reduction which allows the district to assess needs for next year before awarding Educational Assistant contracts. In other staff news, Emma Craig has been approved as a long term substitute for the Two Harbors High School Choir and Preschool Teacher Ann Carlson will be retiring after 20 years of service to the District.
Due to the fact that there are a small number of participants in the Boy’s Golf program, the Board voted to approve an Athletic Cooperative between William Kelley and Two Harbors High schools. This will allow interested students to compete for the season.
The Board also endorsed the process to acquire 4 to 5 school buses. Funding will come from Esser Educational funds and District officials will be looking into options to purchase transportation that will meet the Districts needs. Drivers are also needed, so interested residents should contact the district office for application materials.
Jay Belcastro shared that conversations are happening with State Legislators to secure funding for school improvement projects. Belcastro indicated that action on this has not been taken yet, but he expects to know more of the specifics next month.
Community Education is gearing up for the Spring and Summer. Among other opportunities, Gardening and Behind the Wheel classes will be offered.
Teaching staff will be involved in Professional Development learning over the summer. Training will be offered for implementation of the new math curriculums and staff will also be attending a workshop on assessment, which will involve looking at interpreting test results and planning to address areas where improvement is needed.
