A small group of Two Harbors’ residents is organizing an effort to determine the public’s interest in adding a folk school to the community. They consider a folk school to be a place where people of all ages gather to learn practical skills, create art, share stories, connect with the land, and build community. Folk schools focus on hands-on learning, celebrating local culture, and promoting lifelong curiosity.
You may have seen fliers around town asking folks for input. The organizers write that their mission is, “To create a welcoming place where learning is joyful, local knowledge is valued, creativity thrives, and community grows stronger – together.”
People are being asked to complete an online questionnaire that includes questions such as:
“What should a folk school look like here?”
“What would you want to learn – or teach?”
“What community needs could it serve?”

Ashley Sibik says that the group has reached out to the folk schools located in Duluth, Ely, and Grand Marais for guidance and support, but they really want to hear from the people who will imagine the successful impact of a folk school in Two Harbors.
