The youth bowling team anchored in Silver Bay capped off two major national events this month, starting with the USA Bowling National Tournament and finishing with strong individual showings at Junior Gold, one of the largest youth bowling competitions in the country.
Coach Logan Fischer said the U12 team that won the Upper Great Lakes regional in May held their own at USA Bowling Nationals, finishing the 15‑game qualifying block with a 4–11 record and a 163 average.
The group was eliminated in the early bracket rounds, dropping both matches 0–2. Fischer noted the team that beat them in the first round went on to win the national title, adding, “It wasn’t all bad.”
Three of the bowlers, Keenan Fischer, Brielle Fischer and Emsley Fischer, are from Silver Bay. The fourth, Gabriel Russell, bowls out of Oakdale but has competed with the team throughout the season. All four moved on to Junior Gold, where roughly 3,500 bowlers from across the country competed in divisions ranging from U12 to U18.
Keenan Fischer finished with 2,580 pins and a 161.25 average, placing 72nd out of 237 bowlers in his division. Brielle Fischer closed with 2,456 pins and a 153.5 average, earning 26th place in a field of 122. Emsley Fischer posted 2,575 pins and a 160.94 average, finishing 152nd out of 326. Russell ended with 2,660 pins and a 166.25 average, placing 597th in a large 707‑bowler division.
Fischer said the format, long qualifying blocks followed by multiple cuts, makes Junior Gold unlike any other youth tournament.
“If they have 70 bowlers in a division, the top 10 would go to the next round,” he said.
The event stretched across ten Twin Cities bowling centers, including Cedarvale, Lucky Strike, Concord Lanes, and Drkula’s.
The team stayed through Saturday as results finalized. Fischer said they were glad to experience the tournament while it was hosted in Minnesota for the first time.
